The Cost Of Autism In The UK Is More Than $41 Billion Every Year
Research published this week in the journal Autism, published by SAGE, estimate the annual costs of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) to be more than ÷£27 billion a year. The costs of supporting children with ASDs were estimated to be ÷£2.7 billion per year, ÷£25 billion each year for adults. The findings were presented at the Autism & Employment Workshop at Goldsmiths, University of London.

St. Jude Medical Completes Implants In U.S. Study Of Deep Brain Stimulation For Parkinson's Disease
St. Jude Medical, Inc. (NYSE:STJ) announced the completion of patient implants in its U.S. pivotal clinical study of deep brain stimulation (DBS) for the symptomatic treatment of Parkinson"s disease, a neurological disorder affecting approximately 6.3 million people worldwide that progressively diminishes a person"s control over his or her movements. The announcement was made at the Movement Disorder Society"s 13th International Congress of Parkinson"s Disease and Movement Disorders in Paris.

The AGA Foundation Awards Grant To Dr. Michael Choi To Further His Research On Carcinoid Tumors
The AGA Foundation for Digestive Health and Nutrition (FDHN) has named Michael Y. Choi , MD, the first recipient of the Mary Terese Hartzheim Award for Neuroendocrine Tumor Research. This new research award was created for young investigators interested in researching carcinoid or neuroendocrine tumors. Dr. Choi is an investigator at Massachusetts General Hospital and an instructor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, Boston. He was previously named an AGA Foundation Research Scholar Award recipient in 2005.

World Premiere Of Innovative Medical Devices For Neurosurgery

Renishaw, a world leader in engineering technologies, is introducing an exciting range of high precision systems for functional and stereotactic neurosurgery at the 15th Quadrennial Meeting of the World Society for Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery (WSSFN) taking place in Toronto, Canada, from May 24th to 27th 2009. These include the neuromate® surgical robot, and image-guided stereotactic technologies, some of which are still in development. To mark the formal introduction of Renishaw"s neurosurgical portfolio at WSSFN, the company will also be hosting a special satellite event at the Toronto Cricket Club on Sunday May 24th. Two leading neurosurgeons will give lectures about their experiences with surgical robotics and other new stereotactic technologies, and their vision for their future use. Dr Olivier Delalande, Paediatric Neurosurgeon at the Fondation Rothschild Hospital in Paris, France, will discuss his pioneering use of the neuromate stereotactic robot to perform paediatric procedures including Stereo Electro-Encephalography (SEEG) for epilepsy, and neuroendoscopic disconnection for hypothalamic hamartoma. From Frenchay Hospital in Bristol, England, Professor Steven Gill, who is well known for his pioneering work in placing Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) leads, will also discuss the clinical applications of new technologies in the targeted delivery of therapeutics and their drive towards the requirement for advanced stereotactic systems.
