Other "-Caines" Often Replace Novocaine In The Dentist's Office - Chemical & Engineering News
Novocaine? Not necessarily. The widespread belief that dentists rely on Novocaine to make those office visits almost painless needs some updating, according to an article scheduled for the June 29 issue of Chemical & Engineering News, ACS" weekly newsmagazine. In fact, patients are more likely to get any of several other anesthetics than the century-old standby Novocaine, which once reigned as the archetypal dental anesthetic.

Washington Post Examines Northern Virginia Clinic That Serves People Living With HIV/AIDS
The Washington Post examines one of INOVA Juniper Program"s six clinics serving those with HIV/AIDS located "[t]wo blocks down the road" from the old Whitman-Walker clinic, which "served the Northern Virginia HIV/AIDS community for more than a decade, [and] closed this year because of financial constraints." As of late last month the new Arlington, Va., clinic served 198 people, but Karen Berube, director of the program, said she expects to have 250 clients there by the end of the year. By comparison, the Whitman-Walker center treated 678 people at its Arlington clinic, according to the Post. Services are provided on a sliding-fee scale based on income, "but the majority of patients do not pay anything. Instead, they are funded by Medicaid, Medicare or private insurance, or they receive charity care through government and private donor grants," the article states (Caputo, 7/9).

Can Omega 3 Fatty Acids Prevent Depression In Coronary Heart Disease?
Depression is an established risk factor for the development of coronary heart disease (CHD) in healthy patients and for adverse cardiovascular outcomes in patients with existing CHD. Dietary factors resulting in lower levels of omega 3 fatty acids not only increase CHD risk, but may also be involved in the pathophysiology of depression. The investigators measured red blood cell levels of two omega 3 fatty acids, docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and assessed depressive symptoms in a cross-sectional study of 987 adults with CHD. Omega 3 fatty acids were blindly measured in fasting venous blood samples using capillary gas chromatography to measure the fatty acid composition of red blood cell membranes. Red blood cell levels of EPA and DHA are presented as a percentage composition of total fatty acid methyl esters. The investigators assessed current depression using the 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire. They evaluated the association between omega 3 fatty acid levels and depressive symptoms as continuous variables using linear regression.

Society Launches Updated CPD Recording System

An improved Continuing Professional Development (CPD) recording system is being launched by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society. This has been created as a result of feedback received from users of the CPD recording system, CPD stakeholders, along with the outcomes of the 2007-8 CPD pilot and the recommendations from research conducted by the Welsh School of Pharmacy. The new version, named V4 online and 1.4 on paper, aims to simplify how entries are made and will make the review and feedback process more user-friendly. Janet Flint, Head of Support Staff Regulation, says; "We are excited to be at the point of launching the new CPD recording system which is easier to use and fit for the 21st century. We encourage all pharmacists and pharmacy technicians to use the online version, where possible, but we have also updated the paper version." "CPD is an important aspect of ensuring pharmacists" and pharmacy technicians" career skills are up to date and that they are giving the public the best possible service. This tool should make the CPD requirement easier to record." Pharmacists and pharmacy technicians will be able to access the new online recording system by visiting http://www.uptodate.org.uk The CPD background material, case studies and answers to frequently-asked questions have also been updated and may be accessed via the CPD website. The version 1.4 CPD paper packs can be ordered by calling the pack request line on: 020 7572 2514. Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain
