Alkermes Initiates Two New Clinical Trials Of ALKS 33
Alkermes, Inc. (NASDAQ: ALKS) announced the initiation of two new clinical trials of ALKS 33, an oral opioid modulator for the potential treatment of addiction and other nervous system disorders. Study ALK33-004 is a phase 1 clinical trial designed to examine the ability of ALKS 33 to block the effects of an opioid following a single oral dose of ALKS 33 in healthy, non-dependent, opioid-experienced subjects. Study ALK33-003 is a phase 1 clinical trial designed to evaluate the pharmacokinetics, safety and tolerability of multiple doses of ALKS 33 in healthy volunteers.

NIST Researchers 'All Aglow' Over New Test Of Toxin Strength
A new National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) assay using a "glow or no glow" technique may soon help the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) defend the nation against a spectrum of biological weapons that could be used in a terrorist attack. One very dangerous toxin on the list is ricin, a protein derived from castor beans that is lethal in doses as small as 500 micrograms - about the size of a grain of salt.

IPS Examines Need For New Drugs To Treat Neglected Tropical Diseases

Inter Press Service News Agency examines the shortcomings of treatments for neglected tropical diseases - which, according to the Drugs for Neglected Diseases Initiative (DNDi), account "for 12 percent of the global disease burden," and 1.3 percent of the new drugs developed between 1975 to 2004. "The diseases in question account for the deaths of 500,000 people annually, mostly in sub-Saharan Africa, but drug development is biased towards the prospect of high profits, which diseases of the poor like sleeping sickness and visceral leishmaniaisis are unable to offer," IPS writes. "The pharmaceutical industry does not see neglected diseases as a market, because these diseases affect poor people with few res. Therefore they are not a big market," Marcel Tanner, chairman of the DNDi board of directors, told IPS during a meeting last month in Nairobi to discuss new ways to tackle NTDs. "Existing therapies [for neglected tropical diseases] are often toxic, prohibitively costly and difficult to administer," and overwhelm health personnel, IPS writes.
